Cape Race Lighthouse
The Cape Race Lighthouse, constructed in 1856, is a significant maritime landmark located on the southeastern coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the conservation work led by INTRA Studio focused on stabilizing its structure while preserving its rare historic engineering. Decades of harsh environmental conditions and layered structural modifications had compromised the lighthouse’s integrity. Through careful documentation of the building’s existing condition, including its hyper-radial Fresnel lens and mercury bath system, INTRA Studio developed a conservation strategy aligned with national and international standards. By advising on minimally invasive interventions and material-compatible repairs, the team ensured that structural upgrades would support the lighthouse’s long-term resilience without compromising its heritage character.
